- The Mazda 3i Grand Touring took the second spot, followed by the 2012 Ford Focus SFE.
- The Kia Rio had the lowest average fuel economy in the test at 35.5 mpg.
SANTA MONICA, California — The 2012 Volkswagen Passat TDI managed an “incredible” 45 mpg in Edmunds.com’s 40-MPG Challenge, beating out such competitors as the 2012 Hyundai Veloster and 2012 Chevrolet Sonic Turbo for the top spot among six cars.
The diesel-fueled Passat TDI’s win was characterized by editors as a “true shocker,” given that it was by far the largest, heaviest car in the test. It averaged 43 mpg even in city driving and an amazing 51.7 mpg on the Interstate highway portion of the test route…. Read more here!
Especially with fuel prices here in Southern California, in LA and Orange County, good fuel economy saves us more than most. And not to mention the longevity of VW’s TDI Passat, Jetta, and Golf etc gives them a huge benefit in resale value!
