Volkswagen has unveiled the actual, real, amazingly true-and-actually-finally-coming-to-the-USofA 2017 Golf Sportwagen Alltrack!

In case you couldn’t tell, I’m incredibly excited as I’m a huge Sportwagen fan and an avid outdoors-y person.  The AWD Sportwagen is long overdue.  Hopefully the TDI issue is straightened out and we can get the TDI version also, and then look out Subaru!

Herndon, VA  — New York, NY  — Volkswagen of America, Inc., debuted today the U.S. production version of the all-wheel-drive Golf Alltrack, which goes on sale in the Fall as a 2017 model. The Golf Alltrack is based on the successful Golf SportWagen—Volkswagen SportWagen models have long been a top choice for customers who want a versatile and dependable vehicle that provides a sportier driving experience than compact SUVs.

“We heard from dealers and customers that they wanted to see a Golf SportWagen with the all-terrain capability that comes from an all-wheel drive system,” said Joerg Sommer, Vice President, Product Marketing and Strategy of Volkswagen of America, Inc. “We are excited to introduce the Golf Alltrack to meet the active lifestyle needs of our customers.”

The Golf Alltrack shares its underpinnings with its Golf family siblings, from its MQB architecture to the turbocharged and direct-injection powertrain. The fun-to-drive EA888 1.8-liter, four-cylinder TSI® gasoline unit puts out 170 horsepower and 199 lb-ft of torque. At launch it will be mated to a six-speed dual-clutch DSG® automatic transmission: a six-speed manual transmission will be available at a later date.

While it boasts the on-road manners and fuel economy of a compact wagon, the Alltrack’s defining characteristic is its 4MOTION® all-wheel-drive system. The 4MOTION all-wheel drive system uses the latest generation Haldex-5 coupling, activated via an electro-hydraulic oil pump. In normal driving, the Alltrack acts like a front-wheel-drive car for better fuel economy, but as soon as the system detects wheel slip, up to 50 percent of the drive torque can be shipped to the rear wheels. In addition to the Haldex coupling that acts longitudinally, electronic differential locks (EDL) at the front and rear axles act laterally in concert with the electronic stability control system. The system briefly brakes a wheel that is slipping, enabling uninterrupted and stable transfer of drive power to the wheel on the opposite side. The Golf Alltrack also features nearly an inch higher ground clearance over the SportWagen.

From the outside, the Golf Alltrack’s rugged appearance is easy to differentiate from the SportWagen. Cladding for key body pieces, including the unique bumpers, wheel wells and side sills, gives off-road protection and the front fascia incorporates foglights and a unique honeycomb grille. The S and SE trimlines have 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, while the topline SEL trim has 18-inch wheels. Silver detailing, including roof rails, matte mirror caps and diffusor, adds a premium touch.

Inside, Alltrack mimics SportWagen in layout, but gets a more upscale feel. Leatherette seating surfaces are standard and Alltrack receives a unique brown leatherette option in addition to aluminum pedal covers, door sills with Alltrack branding and ambient lighting. Standard infotainment features include: a 6.5-inch capacitive color touchscreen with proximity sensor, rearview camera, and VW Car-Net® App-Connect connectivity.

A Drive Mode selector includes “Off-Road Mode,” which adds hill descent control and optimizes traction control for off-road terrain. The Off-Road HMI displays compass, steering angle, and altitude when driving off-road. The Alltrack has a spacious trunk that’s in line with those of compact SUVs. With the rear seats up, it boasts 30.4 cu ft of space: when the 60:40 split rear seat is fully folded, that figure rises to 66.5 cu ft of storage. The split folding rear seats are accessed by release levers in the cargo area, maximizing convenience.

Like the rest of the Golf line, the Alltrack provides a combination of both passive and active safety systems. It has been engineered to meet or exceed all current crash regulations and features no fewer than six airbags as standard along with a number of electronic safety systems. Alltrack models are equipped with standard Electronic Stability Control (ESC), the Automatic Post-Collision Braking System and an Intelligent Crash Response System. Available driver assistance systems include: Adaptive Cruise Control, Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking (Front Assist), Lane Assist, and front and rear Park Distance Control with Park Assist.

Chicago, IL (February 11th, 2015)  — Volkswagen of America, Inc, today announced pricing of the all-new Golf SportWagen. With a starting Manufacturers Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $21,395 for the 1.8T S model with manual transmission, the latest SportWagen features more standard equipment, increased fuel efficiency, and more space than the outgoing Jetta SportWagen S model. The TDI® Clean Diesel model starts at $24,595, a reduction of almost $2,000 over the previous base TDI model price.

Scheduled to hit dealer showrooms in April, 2015 Golf SportWagen models will be offered with two powertrains: the EA888 1.8-liter, 170-horsepower turbocharged and direct-injection four-cylinder TSI® engine mated to a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission; and the EA288 2.0-liter, 150-hp turbocharged and direct-injection four-cylinder TDI Clean Diesel, fitted with a six-speed manual or a six-speed DSG® dual-clutch automatic transmission.

The 1.8T model with manual transmission has an EPA estimated highway fuel economy rating of 36 mpg, while the TDI Clean Diesel model gets 43 highway mpg according to EPA estimates. These figures better all compact SUVs on the market, while offering comparable cargo volume—30.4 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 66.5 cubic feet with the seats folded flat.

In addition to a long list of standard amenities, several new comfort and convenience features will be available on the 2015 Golf SportWagen including the Fender® Premium Audio System and Climatronic® automatic air conditioning. Newly available driver assistance systems include Automatic Post-Collision Braking, the Forward Collision Warning System, and front and rear Park Distance Control. An available lighting package includes LED Daytime Running Lights and the Adaptive Front-lighting System.

The Golf SportWagen has grown in size yet dropped in weight by up to 137 pounds (depending on model) compared with the Jetta SportWagen, despite a plethora of new and upscale features. Dimensionally, the Golf SportWagen has grown slightly, by 1.1 inches in overall length to 179.6 inches, and by 0.7 inches in width, to 70.8 inches. However, because the new car is 0.9 inches lower and has a 2.2 inch longer wheelbase, it looks more muscular and has a premium “cab backward” aesthetic.

Golf SportWagen TSI S

The SportWagen TSI S starts at $21,395 and features a standard turbocharged and direct-injection1.8-liter engine; 15-inch aluminum-alloy wheels; Bluetooth® connectivity; a touchscreen radio; Sirius XM® Satellite Radio; a Media Device Interface (MDI) with iPod® integration; leatherette seating surfaces with manual lumbar adjustment; power windows; power door locks; and air conditioning. An automatic transmission is available as an $1,100 option.

Golf SportWagen TSI SE
Available only with the six-speed automatic transmission, the SE starts at $26,995 and adds the following features over the S: 17-inch aluminum-alloy wheels; front foglights; a panoramic sunroof; KESSY® Keyless access with push-button start; a rearview camera, and the Fender® Premium Audio System. An optional Lighting package is available for $995 and includes Bi-Xenon headlights with the Adaptive Front-lighting System, LED DRLs, and ambient interior lighting with LED interior reading lights. The $695 Driver Assistance package includes the Forward Collision Warning System and front and rear Park Distance Control.

Golf SportWagen TSI SEL
Building on the specifications and layout of the TSI SE, the top gasoline-powered SportWagen trim starts at $29,345 and adds: 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels; chrome roof rails; a navigation system; Climatronic® automatic air conditioning; sport comfort seats with a 12-way power driver’s seat; and ambient lighting with LED interior reading lights. The Lighting and Driver Assistance packages are available on the SEL as well.

Golf SportWagen TDI S

The line-up of Clean Diesel Golf SportWagen models largely mirrors its gasoline siblings in terms of features and packages. The base TDI S starts at $24,595 and offers a six-speed manual gearbox and 16-inch aluminum-alloy wheels as standard, with a dual-clutch DSG automatic available for an extra $1,100. KESSY Keyless access with push-button start and a rearview camera are among the standard features.

Golf SportWagen TDI SE
Starting at $27,995, the TDI SE has the same list of equipment and optional packages as its gasoline-powered counterpart, the TSI SE, including the Fender Premium Audio System, automatic headlamps and a panoramic sunroof. The Lighting and Driver Assistance package are available. The DSG transmission is an $1,100 option.

Golf SportWagen TDI SEL
Starting at $30,345, the TDI SEL’s standard equipment mirrors the TSI SEL, adding features such as a navigation system, Climatronic automatic air conditioning, and sport seats with 12-way power adjustment for the driver. Both Lighting and Driver Assistance options packages are available on this trim. The six-speed manual transmission is standard, with the option of the DSG automatic ($1,100 extra).

Eagerly anticipated all-wheel-drive Golf R, Volkswagen’s highest performance model, will be available for pre-order on January 8, 2015

Herndon, VA — Volkswagen of America, Inc. today announced the opportunity for customers to pre-order one of the first 500 available 2015 Golf R models, the most powerful production Golf ever offered in the U.S. The pre-order will go live on VW.com/GolfR on January 8th at 12:01 a.m. EST and customers can secure their place in line by paying a $500 reservation fee.

The first 500 Golf R models will be identical: the topline Golf R with DCC® & Nav and the six-speed DSG® dual-clutch automatic transmission. All the cars will be painted in Lapiz Blue Metallic and feature the 292 horsepower 2.0-liter TSI® engine; 19-inch “Cadiz” aluminum- alloy wheels and summer performance tires; 4Motion® all-wheel drive; Bi-Xenon headlights with LED Daytime Running Lights; DCC® adaptive damping system; Park Distance Control; a navigation system; and the Fender® Premium Audio System. The Golf R with DCC & Nav has a starting MSRP of $39,090, plus $820 destination and delivery charge.

These first 500 owners will receive an exclusive, numbered Volkswagen Driver Gear R accessory kit, which consists of:

 A serialized and VIN-specific certificate

With 292 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque from its turbocharged and direct- injection EA888 TSI® engine, the new Golf R has 36 hp and 37 lb-ft more than the previous version. Despite the additional power and torque, the new R model is considerably more fuel-efficient than its predecessor with an EPA estimated highway fuel economy rating of 30 mpg with the six-speed DSG® transmission, up from 27 mpg for the previous, manual- transmission model.

Like all previous Golf R models, the new model transfers its power to the road via a permanent all-wheel-drive system; in this case, the latest version of the 4Motion® system with a fifth-generation Haldex® coupling. To help ensure great chassis dynamics, there’s a new sport suspension, the progressive variable-ratio steering system, and the ESC Sport stability control system, which can now be deactivated for track driving. Other highlights include the DCC adaptive damping system that is standard on the Golf R with DCC & Nav. The six-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission offers a launch control feature, enabling the car to complete the 0 to 60 mph sprint in just 4.9 seconds. The top track speed is 155 mph.

Herndon, VA  – The 2015 model year is momentous for Volkswagen. First of all, the Jetta, Volkswagen’s best-selling car, is redesigned, with new styling and driver assistance systems, as well as improved fuel efficiency and enhanced content. The newly available driver assistance systems include Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Traffic Alert, the Forward Collision Warning system, and Park Distance Control. The Jetta 1.8T model offers improved fuel efficiency thanks to revised aerodynamics, while the TDI® Clean Diesel model also benefits from fitment of the new EA288 diesel engine. In the case of the manual transmission TDI model, EPA estimated highway fuel economy is now rated at 46 mpg, an improvement of 4 mpg. 

This model year also marks the introduction of the seventh-generation Golf and Golf GTI models, which are bigger, more fuel-efficient, and better equipped than ever before. The new Golf is available in two forms: powerful and efficient TSI® gasoline and TDI Clean Diesel, powered by the new EA288 turbocharged and direct-injection engine. The Golf GTI comes standard with a 210-horsepower, 2.0-liter TSI engine, with the option of a 220-hp engine with the Performance Package that is available late in the calendar year. Golf and Golf GTI models fitted with the optional Driver Assistance Package have been awarded the coveted TOP SAFETY PICK + from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

In addition, Volkswagen will introduce its first fully electric vehicle to the U.S. market, the e-Golf. Due to go on sale in select markets in November of 2014, the e-Golf has more standard torque and more versatility than any of its closest EV rivals. When it goes on sale, it will have a standard 7.2kW onboard charger and Fast Charging Capability, which allows for 80 percent charge within 30 minutes at select DC fast charging stations. The car should provide an everyday driving range of between 70 and 90 miles, with a maximum range of approximately 115 miles.

Later in the model year, Volkswagen will introduce the all-new Golf R and the Golf SportWagen. The Golf R will feature a 4MOTION® all-wheel-drive system and a turbocharged and direct-injection TSI engine that makes 292 horsepower. The car will only be offered in four-door form for the U.S. and will initially be available only with a six-speed dual-clutch DSG® automatic transmission. A six-speed manual will be added to the lineup at a later date.

The Golf SportWagen replaces the Jetta SportWagen early in 2015. Like the all-new Golf, it is based on the Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) architecture and offers better fuel economy, greater versatility, and more interior room than the previous model. It will be offered in two forms: 1.8-liter TSI gasoline engine with five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmissions; and the latest EA288 TDI Clean Diesel engine with the choice of six-speed manual or dual-clutch DSG automatic transmissions.

All Volkswagen models fitted with the 2.0-liter TDI Clean Diesel engine—Passat, Beetle, and Beetle Convertible in addition to the Golf and the Jetta—benefit from the introduction of the EA288 engine. Despite the similarity in basic specifications, this is an all-new engine that produces 150 horsepower—10 more than before—at 3,500 rpm, as well as 236 lb-ft of torque at 1,750 rpm. The engine offers fuel economy benefits for all the cars in which it is offered, as well as reduced emissions.

At the beginning of 2015, halfway through the model year, the Touareg will be replaced by a refreshed model that features new front and rear styling, a refined interior, and a host of available new driver assistance features. These include Lane Assist, Side Assist (which monitors blind spots) and ACC adaptive cruise control plus Front Assist with City Emergency Braking.

 

CARS

Beetle

  • New, and limited-edition Classic trim joins the Beetle lineup
  • New EA288 four-cylinder TDI Clean Diesel engine

For 2015, the 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine TDI Clean Diesel engine will be replaced by the new 150-hp EA288 2.0-liter diesel engine, which makes 10 more horsepower than the outgoing model. The TDI Beetle equipped with the optional six-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission improves EPA estimated highway fuel economy from 39 to 41 mpg compared with the previous TDI Clean Diesel engine.

In addition, a new limited-edition model enters the Beetle lineup. The Beetle Classic will offer unique seat fabric; front lumbar supports; leather-wrapped steering wheel, shift knob and parking brake; three-color ambient lighting; RNS® 315 navigation; and a six-speed automatic transmission. Available wheels on this trim include17-inch “Circle” aluminum-alloy wheels in white or black (depending on exterior color).

Beetle Convertible

  • New, value-oriented and limited-edition Classic trim joins the Convertible lineup
  • New EA288 four-cylinder TDI Clean Diesel engine

Like the Beetle, the 2015 Beetle Convertible also receives the new 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine TDI Clean Diesel engine, improving the EPA estimated highway fuel economy on the automatic transmission model by 3 mpg, to 40 mpg.

In addition, the Convertible also gains the Classic trim level, offering unique seat fabric, RNS 315 navigation, and a six-speed automatic transmission. Wheels available for this trim include 17-inch Circle alloy wheels in white or black (depending on exterior color).

For 2015, the CC incorporates only minor changes over the 2014 models.

Based on the Sport trim, the Final Edition offers added value at the mid-level trim with18-inch Vicenza wheels, unique Cornsilk Beige and black two-tone Vienna leather seating surfaces, contrast stitching, silver net interior trim, a rearview camera and rain-sensing wipers.

e-Golf

  • Brings zero-tailpipe emissions to the fun-to-drive Golf family

The e-Golf is available in four-door form only and is immediately recognizable by its unique aluminum-alloy wheels and LED headlights, the first VW to be equipped with the technology in the U.S.-market. Featuring a signature C-shaped design, the efficient LED daytime running lights are a distinguishing feature of all Volkswagen electric vehicles and come standard on the e-Golf. The e-Golf features more torque (199 pound feet) than its main rivals and is also more versatile, with seating for five and more cargo space than any mid-size sedan.

The 2015 Golf will be available with two or four doors and with two powertrains: the EA888 1.8-liter turbocharged and direct-injection four-cylinder TSI engine mated to a five-speed manual or a six-speed automatic transmission; and the new EA288 2.0-liter turbocharged and direct-injection four-cylinder TDI Clean Diesel, fitted with a six-speed manual or a six-speed DSG® dual-clutch automatic transmission. This is the first time the entire Golf lineup will feature powerful and efficient turbocharged engines. The Golf 1.8T now has an EPA estimated highway fuel economy rating of 36 mpg when equipped with the six-speed automatic transmission, an improvement of 6 mpg over the outgoing 2.5-liter Golf. The manual transmission model achieves 37 mpg on the highway.

The all-new Golf is better equipped than its predecessor, no matter the trim level. The limited-availability entry Golf Launch Edition two-door with manual transmission starts at $17,995 (plus $820 destination and handling) and adds the following over the outgoing Golf 2.5L: a turbocharged and direct-injection four cylinder as the base engine, along with a standard 5.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system, Bluetooth® connectivity, a Media Device Interface (MDI) with iPod® integration, and SiriusXM® Satellite Radio. The Automatic Post-Collision Braking System is standard on all Golf models, while available new comfort and convenience features include the Fender® Premium Audio System and Climatronic® automatic air conditioning.

Fans of the Volkswagen TDI Clean Diesel engine will be thrilled that the price of the base TDI model has been reduced by more than the $3,000 compared with the previous-generation Golf TDI model.

Golf GTI

The all-new Golf GTI features a highly sophisticated EA888 2.0-liter turbocharged and direct-injection TSI engine that makes 210 horsepower and a healthy 258 pound-feet of torque, figures that are 10 hp and 51 lb-ft higher than in the previous-generation GTI model. The optional Performance Package, which goes on sale later in the model year, ups the ante with 220 horsepower, as well as a torque-sensing electronically-controlled limited-slip differential and larger brakes. All 2015 Golf GTI models have a standard six-speed manual transmission or an optional six-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic that has a launch control feature. 

This new-generation Golf GTI is better equipped than its predecessor, regardless of trim level. The Golf GTI S, which starts at $24,395 (plus $820 destination charge) for the two-door model with manual transmission, adds the following over the previous entry-level GTI: standard 5.8-inch touchscreen infotainment center, a leather-wrapped multifunction steering wheel, VW Car-Net® connected services, ambient and footwell lighting with LED reading lights, LED foglights, and a new Driving Mode Selection feature. For the first time, American Volkswagen enthusiasts will be able to order the DCC® adaptive damping system as an $800 option on Performance Package-equipped SE and Autobahn models.

Golf SportWagen

The VW SportWagen has long been a top choice for customers who want a car that’s fun-to-drive and offers a large cargo area that is truly versatile. This new Golf SportWagen is even more appealing, offering nearly 10 percent more cargo room with the rear seats folded than the outgoing model. Essentially, the Golf SportWagen provides a sportier alternative to compact SUVs.

The new SportWagen will be offered with two powertrains. The first is a 170 horsepower, 1.8-liter turbocharged and direct-injection four-cylinder TSI engine, mated to five-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmissions. The TDI Clean Diesel model will be powered by the new EA288 2.0-liter common-rail, turbocharged and direct-injection diesel engine that makes150 horsepower, an improvement of 10 hp over the current SportWagen model, and 236 pound-feet pf torque. The TDI model will have a choice of six-speed manual or DSG dual-clutch automatic transmissions.

Golf R

The 2015 Golf R will be the most powerful version of the Golf ever to be sold in this market. With 292 horsepower, the all-new Golf R has 36 horsepower more than the previous version, which was sold as a 2013 model. Despite the additional horsepower, the new R model is expected to be considerably more fuel-efficient than its predecessor with a manufacturer-estimated highway fuel economy rating of 31 mpg with the six-speed manual transmission, up from 27 mpg. 

Like all three previous Golf R models, the all-new model transfers its power to the road via a permanent all-wheel-drive system; in this case, the latest version of the 4MOTION system with a fifth-generation Haldex® coupling. To help ensure great chassis dynamics, there’s a new sport suspension, a new variable-ratio steering system, and a stability control system which can now be deactivated for track driving. Other highlights include the optional DCC adaptive damping system.

The all-new Golf R is equipped with an extensive package of exclusive features. Along with specially designed bumpers, side skirts, and 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, the Golf R also has standard Bi-Xenon headlights with newly designed LED daytime running lights (in a dual-U design) and a two-branch exhaust system with four chrome tips. The most powerful and fuel-efficient Golf R will be launched in the U.S. in the first quarter of 2015 in four-door form only.

Jetta

Following the updates that arrived with the 2014 model, which included a new 1.8-liter turbocharged EA888 engine that replaced the 2.5-liter five-cylinder unit, the 2015 Jetta brings with it a fresh new face and some important updates underneath. The subtly redesigned exterior not only provides the Jetta with a crisp new look, but also helps increase the overall efficiency of the car by improving aerodynamics: the 1.8T models gain a 1 mpg improvement on the EPA’s estimated highway fuel economy, to 37 mpg. Additionally, the 2015 Jetta features an updated interior, the new EA288 2.0-liter TDI Clean Diesel engine (with 10 additional horsepower), and a host of newly available driver assistance systems.

Passat

The S and Wolfsburg Edition trims now offer an optional Technology Package that includes a rearview camera and the Premium VIII sound system with eight speakers. On S trims, this package includes SiriusXM Satellite Radio, which is standard on Wolfsburg Edition models. The SE with Sunroof trim is removed from the 1.8T lineup, while the SE with Sunroof and Navigation trim adds chrome bumpers and door trim, comfort sport seats and front foglights. SEL Premium trims receive rain-sensing windshield wipers.

The new 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine EA288 TDI Clean Diesel engine makes 10 more horsepower than the outgoing engine and improves the Passat TDI’s EPA estimated highway fuel economy rating to 44 mpg for the manual transmission model (+1 mpg) and to 42 mpg for the automatic (+2 mpg). The manual transmission TDI model now has a range of up to 814 highway miles on one tank of Clean Diesel fuel. Thanks to the use of new all-season optimized rolling resistance tires, the EPA estimated highway fuel economy on the 1.8T models is improved by 1 mpg, to 35 mpg on the manual transmission model and to 36 mpg on the automatic version.

VW E-Golf

LOS ANGELES –  Volkswagen of America, Inc. today announced details of the e-Golf, its first fully electric vehicle to go on sale in the U.S., which will debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show. The e-Golf is part of a structured powertrain strategy that will lead to the timely introduction of new and alternative drive systems, and is a part of Volkswagen’s holistic approach to sustainability, Think Blue. Volkswagen has stated that it aims to be the world leader in e-mobility among automakers by 2018.Although Volkswagen has sold more than 30 million Golf models worldwide, this is the first zero tailpipe emissions, fully electric version of the car that will be sold to the public. The e-Golf is available in five-door form only and is immediately recognizable by its unique aluminum-alloy wheels and by its LED headlights, the first time they have been used as standard on a Volkswagen vehicle. The LED headlights are more energy-efficient than Bi-Xenon systems, yet produce even more light. The standard LED daytime running lights are also highly energy-efficient and have a signature C-shaped design, a feature of Volkswagen’s electric vehicles. Another striking feature is the colored strip across the radiator grille that consciously aligns the e-Golf with Volkswagen’s Think Blue® sustainability campaign.

The e-Golf is due to go on sale in the U.S. in select states in the fourth quarter of 2014.

Powertrain
The e-Golf is powered by a 115-horsepower electric motor. From a standing start the EEM-85 synchronous permanent-magnet AC motor develops an impressive 199 pound-feet of torque, allowing the e-Golf to reach 25 mph from rest in 4.2 seconds and to get to 60 mph in approximately 10.4 seconds. Top speed is electronically limited to 87 mph.

The high-performance 12,000-rpm motor and the single-speed EQ270 transmission form a compact unit: the EQ270 also incorporates an integrated differential and an electro-mechanical parking brake. The motor and transmission was developed in-house and is made at Volkswagen’s components plant in Kassel, Germany.

Depending on driving style and charging behavior, the average range for the e-Golf is between 70 and 90 miles. Helping ensure optimal range in cold weather is a newly developed heat pump that is part of the e-Golf’s comprehensive list of standard equipment. The pump uses both ambient air and heat from the drive system components to heat the cabin rather than relying solely on the high-voltage heater, helping to reduce on-board electrical consumption significantly, especially in winter driving.

Lithium-ion battery. The Golf A7 was developed from the outset to be a Battery Electric Vehicle. As the Modular Transverse Matrix (MQB) architecture that underpins the new Golf A7 is so flexible, Volkswagen was able to integrate the lithium-ion battery in a space-saving frame in the vehicle floor, under the front and rear seats and in the center tunnel. Like the electric motor and the transmission, the battery was also developed in-house at Volkswagen and is made at the company’s facility in Braunschweig, Germany.

The liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery accounts for 701 pounds of the e-Golf model’s 3090-pound curb weight. It is composed of a total of 264 individual prismatic cells, which are integrated into 27 modules (each with six or twelve cells). Collectively, the cells have a nominal rating of 323 volts, with an overall capacity of 24.2 kWh. A battery management controller (BMC) performs diagnosis and monitoring functions and also regulates the temperature balance in the battery junction controller (the interface to the motor’s energy supply). When the car is not in use or in the event of a collision, power from the battery is automatically cut off.

A central element of the drive system is the power electronics module. This controls the flow of high-voltage energy between the electric motor and the lithium-ion battery, depending on the battery voltage, which runs between 250 and 430 volts. During the process the power electronics module converts the direct current (DC) stored in the battery into alternating current (AC). The power electronics therefore have the following interfaces: the traction circuit connection to the battery; the three-phase connection to the electric motor; the plug connection from the DC/DC converter to the 12-volt power circuit; and a connection for the high-voltage power distributor.

Charging concept and equipment
There are several different ways of charging the e-Golf’s battery, via the car’s standard 7.2 kW onboard charger. The most optimal solution is the available 220-volt wallbox for a garage or carport: this charges at 7.2 kW, enabling a completely flat battery to be fully charged in less than four hours. If a 220-volt connection is not available, the most cost-effective and easiest alternative is to plug the standard charging cable into a 110/120-volt electrical socket, which will take around 20 hours to charge the battery.The standard Combined Charging System (CCS) plug gives the e-Golf the capability to also take advantage of DC Fast Charging infrastructure. In this case the car can be recharged at CCS-equipped DC fast charge stations at levels of up to 40 kW, allowing the battery to be charged to 80 percent in around 30 minutes. For added flexibility, the charging process can be activated—immediately or programmed for later—by pressing a button next to the charging socket under the ‘fuel cap’ or through an available iPhone® or Android® app.

Innovative driver control 

The e-Golf features two technologies that allow the driver to control the vehicle’s energy use: three driving profiles designed to preserve energy (‘Normal’, ‘Eco’, and ‘Eco+’); and three different levels of regenerative braking (‘D1’, ‘D2’, and ‘D3’/‘B’).

‘Eco’ and ‘Eco+’ driving profiles. The e-Golf has three driving profiles: ‘Normal’, ‘Eco’ and ‘Eco+’. The car automatically defaults to ‘Normal’ mode upon start up. To extend the range, the first option is the ‘Eco’ mode, which pares back the electric motor’s maximum power output to 94 hp and the starting torque to 162 lb-ft. In parallel, the electronics reduce the output of the air conditioning system and modify the response curve of the accelerator pedal. In Eco mode, the e-Golf is limited to a top speed of 72 mph and 0 to 62 mph acceleration is increased to 13.1 seconds.

In ‘Eco+’ mode, the electronics limit the power output to 74 hp and the starting torque to 129 lb-ft, further flatten the accelerator pedal response curve and the air conditioning is switched off. The e-Golf now reaches a top speed of 56 mph and accelerates at a correspondingly slower rate. Nevertheless, full power, maximum torque, and the 87 mph top speed can be obtained if the driver depresses the accelerator pedal fully down in either ‘Eco’ or ‘Eco+’ mode.

Regenerative braking settings. In addition to the driving modes, the regenerative braking system can also be used to manage range. There are three driver-selectable levels available: ‘D1’, D2’, and ‘D3’/‘B’. It works like this: to switch to ‘D1”, ‘D2”, or ‘D3”, the driver taps the “shift” lever to the left once, twice, or three times. Tapping the knob to the right moves sequentially back to ‘D’. If the lever is pushed to the right and briefly held there, the electronics switch straight back to ‘D’. The driver activates regenerative braking level ‘B’, which is the same as ‘D3’, by pulling the lever backwards.

In an electric car this amount of flexibility can lead to a different way of driving. It is possible to use regenerative braking consciously to slow the e-Golf down. Level ‘D1’ regenerates energy and slows down the car the least, while level ‘B’ has the strongest effect. At levels ‘D2’, ‘D3’ and ‘B’, the deceleration via regenerative braking is so strong that the brake lights come on automatically. However, if the battery is fully charged, no energy regeneration takes place.

Aerodynamics 
Volkswagen took very specific measures to lower the e-Golf model’s coefficient of drag (Cd). Among these were: reducing the volume of cooling air via a radiator shutter and partially enclosed radiator grille; new underbody paneling; a rear spoiler and C-pillar air vanes to better manage airflow at the tail of the car; and cleaning up the airflow around the wheels, largely by ensuring they are flush with the wheelarches.

Acoustics
Electric drive systems present an acoustic challenge because the noise from an internal combustion engine is absent and thus different sources of sound become noticeable, while wind and tire noise become even more apparent. In addition, barely perceptible yet very specific electric drivetrain noises are joined by the sounds and vibrations of the electrically powered auxiliary components. To help ensure pedestrians can hear this almost silent vehicle coming, the e-Golf has a low-speed sound system installed.

Volkswagen specifically tailored the acoustics of the e-Golf for an electric vehicle, making it an almost silent cruiser. For instance, the powerplant’s subframe was changed to a pendulum mount: despite the electric motor’s high torque build-up when accelerating, this greatly enhances the acoustics. The motor housing unit was also specifically designed to achieve an extremely low level of noise emission. Finally, the interior uses highly sound-absorbent and yet very lightweight materials to produce a vehicle that is quieter than many luxury cars.

Design
Visually the e-Golf is distinguished by its energy-efficient LED headlights, used here for the first time on an American Volkswagen model. Compared to Bi-Xenon lights, the LED system produces more light despite consuming less power. Going forward, Volkswagen electric cars will feature a C-shaped LED DRL signature in the redesigned front bumper. The lack of tailpipes at the rear of the car is an obvious clue that this is an EV, along with the badging and blue highlights on the VW logo. Other e-Golf design features include aerodynamically optimized 16-inch aluminum-alloy wheels with low rolling resistance 205-section tires.

Interior. The e-Golf has an extremely high level of available equipment, starting with a touchscreen navigation system. Other features included are: VW Car-Net™ connected services; Keyless access with push-button start; heatable front seats; a leather-wrapped multi-function steering wheel; Bluetooth® technology; V-Tex leatherette seating surfaces; available SiriusXM® Satellite Radio; a rear-view camera; and Park Distance Control. The interior is also enhanced by blue elements, including the decorative seams on the steering wheel and shifter, plus the floor-mat edgings.

In addition, the e-Golf has a new instrument layout. The tachometer, which normally lives on the left-hand-side of the instrument cluster, is replaced by the power display—which indicates if the motor is ready, the battery is being charged via regenerative braking, or power is being drawn off—and an indicator of available output.

To its right, there is a conventional speedometer. The lower section of the speedometer now has an indicator showing the high-voltage battery’s state of charge. The color display between the power gauge and the speedometer now indicates the driving range, the current level of regenerative braking, and the remaining charging time and the type of charging connection. In a separate LED field at the lower segment of the multifunction display, the ‘READY’ message also appears after starting the motor.

The touchscreen in the center console is also equipped with additional functionality, such as:

• Range monitor: this provides a graphic illustration of the vehicle’s current range.
The impact that auxiliary components such as the air conditioning or heater would have on range is also displayed: the driver can gain additional range by switching these off.

• Energy flow indicator: this depicts the energy flow when accelerating (blue arrows) and when regenerative braking is happening (green arrows). Regenerative braking statistics show the amount of energy recovered since the start of the journey.

• e-manager: this enables drivers to pre-program up to three departure and charging times. At the defined time, this helps ensure that the vehicle has the air conditioning level set and the battery charged.

Driver Assistance Systems

The e-Golf features as standard a new assistance system called the Automatic Post-Collision Braking System. Studies in accident research have shown that about a quarter of accidents that involve personal injury are of the multi-collision type—in other words, there’s a second impact after the initial collision.

The APCBS automatically slows the vehicle when it is involved in an accident in order to significantly reduce its residual kinetic energy. The system is triggered based on detection of a primary collision by the airbag sensors. Vehicle braking by means of the system is limited by the ESC control unit to a maximum rate of 0.6 g.

The driver can ‘override’ the system at any time; for example, if the system recognizes that the driver is accelerating, it gets disabled. The automatic system is also deactivated if the driver initiates hard braking at an even higher rate of deceleration.

Customer Experience
Volkswagen intends to make the e-Golf ownership experience as seamless as possible. This includes offering a Roadside Assistance Plan that’s designed to take the anxiety out of “range anxiety”. For instance, if the customer runs out of charge and is within 100 miles of their home, Volkswagen’s Roadside Assistance provider will deliver the car to a nearby and convenient source for charging and will even pay for the customer to take a taxi home or to work if they decide not to travel with the car. The plan covers unlimited events.

The e-Golf will have its own dedicated “VW Car-Net e-Remote” app that will allow owners to adjust vehicle settings via a compatible smartphone or the VW Car-Net website. The app will contain the following functions:

• Climate control: Starting and stopping the auxiliary climate control function,
plus a display of the outside temperature and the target temperature for the car’s interior.

• Charging the battery: Starting and stopping the charging process, indicating
charger connection status, charge status, charge progress, charge level, charge start time and range.

• Accessing vehicle data: Information display relating to individual journeys (single
trips or long term), such as miles driven, journey time, electric motor power consumption, power consumption of auxiliary components such as air conditioning and radio, use of regenerative braking.
• Vehicle status queries: Doors and trunk locked, lights (on/off), charging cable plugged in, position where the car was last parked (GPS position on a map).
