If you’re interested enough in VW to be here, then you’re most likely aware of the issue surrounding Volkswagen diesel engines and the emissions recall.  Its been a little while since I’ve posted, so I thought I would give you a quick rundown on what happened and whats going on…

The most important thing, is that there is NOTHING wrong with your car.  It is 100% safe and in no way if you’re a TDI owner should you worry.  This issue is solely related to emissions, nothing else regarding safety or performance.

VW cheated, they’ve admitted it and are actively working on figuring out who was involved and how high up in the company the issue went.  There was software installed that could detect the driving situation when the cars are being tested for emissions.  When the car was in testing the software changed the way it ran to get better results, passing the test.  When in real-world driving the computer allowed to car to run at normal levels, which were about the allowed amounts of emissions.  Reports say 40-60x the allowed amounts, when in reality, it is at such low levels its still tiny.

VW is working as quickly as possible to resolve the issue, with progress already being made for European models.  We’re hoping a US fix that doesn’t affect the performance will be out in the near future, though there’s no word from VW on when it will happen.

VW is doing everything possible to make amends.  They are helping dealers get through this time, and most importantly, they’re offering all affected TDI owners a goodwill package of $1000.  If you’re a TDI owner, you can register here.

On a somewhat personal note, its been super-encouraging to see all the TDI owners I’ve worked with over the last month.  Its amazing that almost every single person I talk to has nothing but good things to say about their car.  The only issue thats consistent is the “Hope the EPA doesnt force VW to mess up their car.”  VW love!
